RYA Powerboat – Level Two

Course Enquiry

About this course

The RYA’s National Powerboat Scheme is for those wanting to drive small open powerboats such as RIBs (rigid inflatable boats), sports boats and small launches. These boats are generally powered by an outboard engine, do not normally have accommodation on board, and so are not intended for extended cruises. They may be used for short coastal or inland trips, fishing, safety cover for other watersports, waterskiing or as a support boat for diving.

Whether you use powerboats for leisure or work, or in connection with another activity such as sailing or rescue, this course is for you.

During the course, you will be given the opportunity to practice your boat handling in a variety of mooring and coming alongside situations, and whilst on the water your instructor will cover subjects such as tides and currents and how to cope in emergency situations such as ‘man over board’.

A skipper is totally responsible for the management of the powered vessel, so the course also includes meteorology, basic engine checks, passage planning, preparing for sea, and rules of the road. In addition, high speed maneuvering is undertaken.

On successful completion of this course you will be issued with the RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate.

This course will introduce the new comer to the sport of power boating, including different types of powerboats, basic boat checks, pre launch checks, basic powerboat handling skills at both low and high speed and how to plan a short passage then carry it out using the skills taught.
